The Jazz Alchemists is a musical collective that embodies the essence of transformation and spontaneity, much like the ancient practice of alchemy itself. Led by guitarist and composer Albare, the group approaches jazz with an open-ended philosophy, where compositions serve as starting points rather than rigid structures. The ensemble thrives on the chemistry between its musicians, blending traditional jazz with modern influences, world rhythms, and deep improvisational interplay. Each performance is unique, shaped by the moment and the interaction between the artists, creating a fluid and evolving musical journey.
At its core, the Jazz Alchemists embrace the idea that jazz is a living, breathing art form, meant to evolve beyond set formulas. With musicians like pianist Phil Turcio, bassist Phil Rex, drummer Andrew Swann, Trimpetist Mat Jodrell guitarist Albare, and others, the band crafts soundscapes that move between groove-based foundations and free-flowing improvisation. The name itself reflects their musical mission—to transmute melodies and harmonies into something unexpected and profound. Whether on stage at Bird’s Basement or in the studio, the Jazz Alchemists challenge convention, ensuring that no two performances are ever the same.
Trumpeter Mat Jodrell, one of the most exciting voices in Jazz today just returned to Australia after spending 8 years in New York. Mat has has performed with the likes of Benny Golson, Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, Carl Allen, Bill Watrous and Gary Bartz to name but a few.
On bass Phil Rex. Phil has toured extensively with Albare in 2013-14, you can hear Phil's bass on Albare's "Dream Time" album recorded 2015. Like his teacher, the late Ray Brown, Phil has an infectious downbeat that gets the audience to actively listen and more often than not, get off their chairs.
